When Grind Goes Wrong In Mobile RPGs

September 13, 2026 · Lukas Vogel

Grinding isn't automatically bad. Done right, it's the quiet satisfaction of getting a little stronger each session. Done wrong, it's a wall the game puts up hoping you'll stop noticing how little is happening.

The test I use is simple: does the grind change how I play, or just the numbers? In a good RPG, levelling unlocks new tactics, abilities, or positioning options. In a bad one, you fight the same fight slightly slower.

Ember Vanguard, which we reviewed, gets this right because gear changes your playstyle rather than just your stats. That's the difference between looking forward to an upgrade and dreading another identical battle.

If you find yourself autoplaying through content you've already mastered just to hit a number, the game has stopped respecting your time. That's usually my cue to move on, and I think it should be yours too.
